In this interview we are talking to Fabian Seithel, Associate Vice President – Sales & Business Development (Nordics, Central & Eastern Europe) at GEOTAB.
What is your company’s vision and how do you embrace it in your everyday doing?
At Geotab, we believe in the power of vehicle data to help improve road traffic and safety, reduce CO2 emissions and make businesses and their fleets – e.g. carsharing fleets – more efficient. We empower businesses to make the roads safer for everyone by using data to make the right decisions. We see our products as building blocks on which everybody can create individual solutions that drive business. In our open platform, customers can extend the functionality of MyGeotab and create their individual applications. Also, we want to have an impact on sustainability e.g. with our EV support and smart city solutions.
What is the impact you would like to have on the mobility of the future?
We aim to provide our customers with advanced connected vehicle technologies that ultimately help contribute to the transformation and digitalization of the mobility sector. With our approach to IoT, open data access and the integration of vehicle and asset data into overall business processes Geotab enables information sharing for real-time decision-making. Another big topic is sustainability. Regulations and sustainability goals are approaching fast. That makes it important for fleets to start creating strategies for reducing CO2 emissions and incorporating EVs. We drive sustainability by analyzing and visualizing the environmental impact of customers’ fleets, as well as offering solutions for CO2 reduction and by identifying which available EVs could replace regular combustion vehicles. Also, when it comes to mobility of the future, our Keyless product enabling keyless access to power carsharing fleets is an integral part of our product offering.
What is the core business of your company?
At Geotab we connect commercial vehicles to the internet and provide web-based analytics to help customers improve their fleet management and advanced security. Our open platform and Marketplace allow businesses of any size and vehicle type to automate operations by integrating vehicle data with their other data assets. As an IoT hub, the in-vehicle device provides additional functionality through IOX Add-Ons. We process billions of data points a day, which leverages data analytics and machine learning. Eventually, this contributes to customers improving their productivity, optimizing their fleets through the reduction of fuel consumption, enhancing driver safety, and achieving strong compliance to regulatory changes. Let’s take Geotab’s OEM Data Platform for example. By adding an embedded telematics device into the vehicle, we enable access to telematics data without the need of additional external hardware. Customers can view and manage all of the vehicle and equipment data from one telematics dashboard, independently of the OEM or telematics device used. We are very happy to have partnered up with leading vehicle manufacturers such as Ford and Mercedes-Benz Connectivity Services to provide them with an integrated platform solution for an entire fleet and all assets.
Can you give us an example of how your customers use your solution?
Sure. Let’s take our Geotab Keyless digital key solution. It is a scalable digital key solution. Being able to access a car without a physical key helps to save time and makes the driving experience more convenient for the consumers. The fully digitized keys lock and unlock vehicles offering secured vehicle access for pooled and shared fleets. Among our global software partners for Geotab Keyless we have Ridecell, fleetster, Eccocar, Wunder Mobility and Moove Connected Mobility.
Another great example is last mile delivery. With our fleet management solutions, we contribute to making last mile deliveries safer, more cost-effective and emission-free. Our technology enables companies to get information about the exact location of the delivery vehicles, the delivery status and the drivers’ behavior. In addition, our EVSA tool evaluates all fleet vehicles to determine which combustion vehicles can be replaced by EVs that can do the job by offering enough range, and at the same time reduce costs and CO2 emissions. These tools help fleets when we think about increasing fuel costs and, of course, we can contribute fundamentally to the reduction of CO2 emissions.
What is special about your company? What are the aspects you are particularly proud of?
Since the beginning of Geotab in 2000, we have grown from a small, family business to a global leader in solutions for fleet management and vehicle tracking. We are very proud of now being one of the largest telematics suppliers in the world. One of the reasons for our success is probably the fact that our Geotab product is not static. We work by the idea of embracing change and invest a lot in the right people, who drive research and development to make our products and solutions better and better.
How can telematics and vehicle data make fleets more sustainable and efficient?
Data transparency plays a crucial role when it comes to sustainability and efficiency. Following our guideline “management by measurement” we tackle business challenges by getting valuable insights based on customer data. Our vehicle tracking device captures and transmits all sorts of fleet data, such as the location, information about the vehicle health, about the driver and more. With our fleet management software you can then use this data to optimize routing and manage driver behavior to e.g. improve driver safety, and receive transparency about engine health and maintenance. In addition to the already mentioned EVSA, we provide further powerful EV management tools such as our temperature tool for EV range to better understand how different temperatures affect EV range and the EV battery degradation tool to discover the durability of your EV battery. Today we support more than 150 EV makes and models, which makes us very proud.
Why is an open platform important?
Our open platform for fleet management gives customers a new level of insight. It allows easy integration with the Software Development Kit (SDK) and APIs. Our Geotab Marketplace offers a variety of customized solutions. We believe in open data and in free access to it. For us, choice is essential. We want to enable our customers to choose the platform that they want and that works best for them. Our open platform systems enable collaboration and “co-opetition”. This means that we actually have some products in our Marketplace that compete with Geotab. Everybody can use one another’s technology and platform, which at the end of the day is a crucial advantage for the consumer. Also, our open platform makes it possible for OEMs to integrate telematics data from the manufacturer by using an embedded device and make OEM-specific vehicle information and valuable telematics data available in the MyGeotab fleet management software.
What are the synergies between your company and Ben about?
Having data-driven insights e.g. about engine faults, upcoming service intervals or simply low fuel levels only provides added value once the necessary measures are put into practice. This is in particular true for shared fleets. While the Geotab technology can generate these insights, a player such as Ben is needed in order to take action and solve the problem. Such a conjoint offering can take a lot of burden from the fleet operator and its drivers and / or customers.
